Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What can I expect from my first session? The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll talk about what's brought you to counselling, what you're hoping to experience or change, and what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with — we go at your pace. By the end, we'll have a sense of whether we're a good fit and what working together might look like.

Do you offer a free consultation? Yes. I offer a free 15-minute phone or video call before your first session. It's a no-pressure opportunity to ask questions, get a feel for how I work, and make sure we're a good fit before committing to anything.

How do I know if counselling is right for me? If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like something in your life isn't working, counselling can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. Many people come to counselling during transitions, to work through patterns that keep repeating, or simply because they want to understand themselves better. If you're curious whether it might help, that curiosity is usually reason enough to try.

Sessions

What types of sessions do you offer? I work with individuals (adults), couples, youth and teens, and families. Whether you're navigating something on your own or want to work through challenges together with someone you care about, there's a path forward here.

How are sessions delivered? Sessions are available both in-person and virtually via secure video call. Virtual sessions are a great option if you prefer the convenience of connecting from home or if you're located elsewhere in BC. We can discuss what format works best for you when we connect.

How long is a session? Individual and youth sessions are 50 minutes. Couples and family sessions are 60 minutes. Longer sessions are available if needed.

How often will we meet? Most clients begin by meeting weekly, which helps build momentum early on. As things shift, we can move to bi-weekly or monthly sessions. The frequency is always something we decide together based on what you need.

How many sessions will I need? This varies from person to person. Some people find that 6–10 sessions give them what they need; others choose to work together over a longer period. There's no set timeline — we check in regularly, and you're always in the driver's seat about how long we continue.

Fees & Coverage

What are your fees? Individual and youth sessions are $125 per 50 minutes. Couples and family sessions are $150 per 60 minutes. A sliding scale may be available for those experiencing financial hardship — please reach out to discuss. [Fill in your rates.]

Can I use my extended health benefits? Yes — it depends on your specific plan. I am currently working toward my professional certification, which means coverage will vary. Some extended health plans reimburse counselling services provided by counsellors-in-training or qualifying practitioners; others require full registration with a body such as the BCACC or CCPA. We strongly recommend contacting your benefits provider directly before your first session to confirm whether my services are eligible under your plan.

We do not direct bill. You pay at the time of your appointment and receive a receipt to submit to your insurer yourself.

What information do I need to submit a benefits claim? Your receipt will include the date of service, session fee, service description, and my credentials and registration details as they stand at the time. If your insurer has specific requirements, let me know, and I'll do my best to accommodate them.

What is your cancellation policy? I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee. Life happens, and I'll always try to be flexible when something unexpected comes up.

Working with Youth & Families

At what age do you work with young people? I work with youth and teens from age 10 onward. For younger children, I'm happy to recommend other practitioners who specialize in that age group.

Do parents attend youth sessions? For teen clients, sessions are typically one-on-one to build a trusting, confidential space. Depending on the situation, I may recommend occasional check-ins with parents or the whole family together. We'll talk through what makes the most sense for your child at the outset.

What does family counselling look like? Family sessions bring members together to work on communication, conflict, transitions, or challenges affecting the whole household. Sessions are collaborative — there's no identified "problem person." The goal is to help everyone understand each other better and find new ways of connecting.

Confidentiality & Safety

Is what I share confidential? Yes. Everything you share in our sessions is confidential. There are a small number of legal and ethical exceptions — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or if records are subpoenaed by a court. I'll explain these limits in full during our first session, so there are no surprises.

Are youth sessions confidential too? Yes, with the same ethical limits that apply to adult sessions. For younger clients, I'll discuss with both the young person and their parent or guardian at the start how information will be handled, so everyone feels clear and safe.

What if I'm in crisis between sessions? If you're in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. For mental health crisis support, you can reach the BC Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433, available 24/7. We can also build a personalized safety plan together so you have support in place between sessions.

Practical Questions

Where are you located? I'm based in Cloverdale, BC, and offer in-person sessions at #5748 176th  Street, Cloverdale, Surrey, BC. V3S 4C8. Virtual sessions are also available.

How do I book an appointment? You can reach out through the contact form on this page, or email at info@ntdcounselling.com. I typically respond within 1 business day.

What if we're not a good fit? That's a completely valid concern, and one I take seriously. If, after a session or two, you feel this isn't the right fit, I'll do my best to help connect you with another counsellor who might be better suited to what you're looking for. Finding the right support matters more than continuing with me specifically.
